The Eyes
A companion translation
When I go to the sea, I bring back some water — clear, tinged blue, like your eyes. Such rare stones I find on ocean voyages, stones your iris is compared to. Are you a woman, or the shore where every metaphor comes to rest? All evening I have been dust — the moment I take off my glasses I will slip into the tender socket of your eye. And I will not come out again unless you yourself say — 'blow on it once, see what has gotten into my eye—'Every poem is a small sea — you go looking for one thing, and come back holding something else.
